Information for New Faculty

Welcome! This website is designed to help you prepare to begin your new position with Furman University and  includes information about class schedules, academic policies, and other resources that you might find helpful – including information about  Furman accounts and passwords, how to get a campus parking pass, and details about our student body and our community.

If you have questions that the site does not answer, please feel free to contact your department chair, dean, or any of us at the Faculty Development Center (FDC), where we coordinate Furman’s orientations for new full-time and adjunct/part-time faculty and, more generally, promote engaging, inclusive and scholarly teaching.

Welcome First Year @ Furman!

The Faculty Development Center team, along with Human Resources, Academic Affairs, and your respective departments are gearing up to welcome you and kick off the Fall semester here on campus.  Here is some information about each of these offices and how they may assist you in settling in.

Academic Affairs

The Office of Academic Affairs oversees all areas of faculty and academic support. It consists of a vice president for academic affairs and provost, two associate provosts as well as six academic deans.

The office is responsible for managing Furman’s academic programs, including the hiring of all faculty and optimization of resource allocations and staffing within Academic Affairs. It also works closely with students, parents and faculty to ensure academic regulations are followed, and that Furman’s integrity pledge is honored. To visit the Academic Affairs website click here.

Human Resources

The Office of Human Resources is dedicated to supporting the mission and goals of Furman University by delivering a wide array of programs and services to its employees. Learn more about Human Resources.

You may be specifically interested in:

  •  I-9 Form and instructions available in WorkDay.
  • Processing Moving Reimbursements – If you negotiated  moving expenses reimbursement  there’s no need to keep receipts.  The sum of your reimbursement will be included in your first monthly paycheck and be subject to tax withholding to the extend required by applicable law.

Faculty Development Center

The Faculty Development Center offers  a wide variety of resources, programs and services to guide you throughout your career at Furman University.  A New Faculty Resource Guide (2019-2020) is available here and you will receive information about the New Faculty Orientation prior to your arrival at Furman.

Academic Calendar

The Academic Calendar lists important dates such as Registration and Grading, Staff Holidays, Religious Observances, Billing & Financial Aid, Continuing Education, Graduate Studies, Housing & Dining and Required Maintenance. This calendar is published and updated by Enrollment Services.

Bookstore

Operated by Barnes & Nobles, the Furman University bookstore is filled with Paladin apparel, fine items and gifts.  They created FacultyEnlight to make it easier for you to research, discuss, discover and adopt learning materials.

The Chronicle of Higher Education

Furman University has a domain-level subscription which allows faculty free access when using a Furman email address.Visit The Chronicle of Higher Education.

Copying and Printing

P2X provides affordable and convenient printing and copying services for students, faculty, staff and the public.

ID Cards

Faculty ID cards can be acquired through the Enrollment Services Office, located in Suite 102 of the Furman Administration Building.  You can find more details on the Enrollment Services website.

Information Technology Services (ITS)

Information Technology Resources provides many services for Furman students, faculty and staff.  View our most used IT services.  If you have questions, please contact the IT Service Center.

Library Liaisons

Your Library Liaison can help you with resource selection, information fluency instruction or research assistance.  You can find a Library Liaison.

Health Services

Furman University has partnered with Prisma Health to operate our Employee On-Site Clinic, located next door to the Human Resources Department at 5013 Old Buncombe Rd (same shopping center as the neighborhood Walmart).  For more information, visit the clinic’s website.

Annual Evaluation

Information about the Annual Faculty Evaluation can be found in the Furman University Policies and Procedures Manual, Policy No. 152.2.

Travel to Conferences

As many colleges are, we are working to rebound from the effects of the global pandemic.  When we are able to support travel again in the future, the  Dean’s Office has funding to support faculty travel to Professional Conferences.  For more information please find policy number 166.1 in the Faculty Policies and Procedures.

Tenure

Tenure could be a long and difficult process when you don’t know where to start.  Furman’s Policy number 158.4  provides you with basic information to begin your road to the next stage of your career.

Grants and Research Administration

Furman’s Grant and Research Administration website offers information about Sponsored Programs, including but not limited to University and Federal Regulations for Proposal Submissions, Information on Potential Sources of Grants Funding and Information on Proposal Preparation.
