Each year, the Riley Institute presents policy events, annual series, and award events on Furman’s campus and across South Carolina. All events are open to the public and encourage attendees to think critically about the most pressing policy issues of our time, including issues such as American democracy, immigration, criminal justice, wealth and poverty, and racial justice.

Are you a student interested in public policy events? Learn more about our Advance Team, which supports our events and plans an annual CLP.

Meet the Events Team

Our local- and state-focused events consider policy issues of particular relevance to Greenville and wider South Carolina, how those policies affect our communities, and how we can change systems to advance more equitable outcomes for all in our state. Speakers at these events include public servants, nonprofit leaders, and members of our local business communities.

Our American society and politics events build knowledge and offer diverse perspectives on pressing issues in our national discourse. Our programs bring high-level, qualified experts and practitioners from across fields to campus to shed light on some of the biggest challenges we face as a nation and to offer possible solutions. Speakers frequently examine how social identities and systems influence our view of politics and consider how policies advance or hinder progress on the most critical issues of our time.

Our international affairs events aim to educate attendees on complex global challenges, how those are being addressed at the international level, and what effect they have on our own domestic policies. The China’s Global Rise series recurs every few years and offers an in-depth examination of U.S.-China bilateral relations.

Our award events recognize individuals and initiatives committed to advancing equity and progress in the areas of: legislative and civic leadership, diversity, public education, and pressing public issues in South Carolina. These events, which focus on celebrating and learning from the winners, underscore institute’s belief that progress requires leadership, innovation, and a commitment to working together to address our state’s challenges.
