Greenville: Revitalized or Gentrified?
On November 16, 2022, the Riley Institute Advance Team hosted a CLP event on Greenville’s growth, which has benefitted many, but has also displaced others through gentrification. Tina Belge manager of the Greenville Affordable Housing Coalition and advocacy and community engagement manager at the Greenville Housing Fund, set the stage for the conversation with a brief presentation on the history of gentrification in Greenville. Following this presentation, the director of Furman’s Center for Applied Sustainability Research, Mike Winiski, moderated a candid conversation with Belge, Greenville Mayor Knox White, and Alan Mitchell, the president of the Nicholtown Neighborhood Association and representative for Greenville County Council District 23.
S.C. Supreme Court Events
In 2023, the Riley Institute had the honor of hosting the S.C. Supreme Court as part of a unique program designed to promote accessibility and engagement with communities throughout the state. The institute also hosted Justice Kaye Hearn at a spring 2024 Advance Team event that focused on the issue of diversity on the court.
