About the Riley Institute Summer Experience
The Riley Institute Summer Experience (RISE) connects Furman students with partner organizations in the Upstate that are working to solve critical public issues and drive progress in our community. Host organizations work to address the root causes of social and economic challenges in our area, and their work intersects with and influences public policy. RISE interns are embedded full time in these organizations for 10 weeks from June to August, where they develop professional skills, gain knowledge about applied public policy issues, and help increase their host organization’s capacity for community impact work.
What do RISE interns do?
As a RISE intern, you will:
- Participate in a full-time internship (35 hours per week) for 10 weeks, June to August with an organization in the community working to address critical public issues;
- Have a designated site supervisor and mentor who will meet with you regularly and help you develop your work plan;
- Attend weekly meetings at Furman with other RISE interns to work on internship goals and learn about various career paths related to community impact and public policy work;
- Respond to weekly reflection prompts and contribute social media content to highlight the RISE program and your partner organization;
- Receive up to 5 days off over the course of the 10-week internship;
- Receive funding through Furman’s internship office ($3,500);
- Receive free campus housing, paid for by the Riley Institute, if you live on campus; and
- Receive TFA-003 zero credit course (so the internship appears on your official transcript).
