Small Scale (Chemical contact on body)
Remove any contaminated clothing, and flood the contaminated skin with water for at least fifteen minutes. If it is a biological spill, use soap and water. Use faucets or emergency safety showers. If chemicals are in contact with the eyes, forcibly hold them open, and flush them out for fifteen minutes, and if available, use an emergency eyewash station. Ensure your professor or supervisor is notified. Obtain medical attention if needed. Ensure that no one else enters the contaminated area.
Large Scale (Spills)
Anyone who is in contact with the chemical should follow the guidelines above. Do not attempt to clean or contain the spill unless authorized and qualified to do so. Evacuate the contaminated area and ensure that safety officials have been notified.
Prevention
Ensure that you read a chemical’s Safety Data Sheet and understand the potential hazards, as well as how to handle the chemical. Make sure you are wearing the proper safety equipment.
