Student positive for COVID-19, recovering at home

Student positive for COVID-19, recovering at home

SUBJECT: Student positive for COVID-19, recovering at home

TO: Furman Students, Faculty and Staff

FROM: Furman University

We learned late yesterday afternoon that a Furman student has tested positive for COVID-19. The student has been at home since experiencing symptoms and is there recovering. Before becoming ill, the student traveled away from campus with three other Furman students; those students have been notified of the positive test and are self-quarantining at their homes. They are currently not showing symptoms of illness.

While COVID-19 is a pandemic, and the number of infections in the United States has risen significantly, this is the first report of a Furman student or employee testing positive for the infection.

For your health and others’, the university strongly encourages all students, faculty and staff to take social distancing measures seriously, to follow the CDC’s guidelines for staying healthy, and to isolate yourself immediately if you start to feel symptoms of COVID-19, including fever, cough or shortness of breath.

Students who have not returned to campus to retrieve their belongings may still do so through Sunday, April 5. Students may only bring two additional individuals with them to campus to assist with the move. Please coordinate with your roommate or roommates so you and your families are not all moving out at the same time if you can avoid it, and do not stay in campus housing overnight if at all possible.

If you or your family or someone you’ve been in close contact with are experiencing symptoms of or have been tested for COVID-19, please do not return to campus. Students who need an extension to move out, for any reason, should follow the instructions in the student Q&A section of the Furman COVID-19 website.

Our health partner, Prisma Health, is advising all employees and students who live in South Carolina and who think they may have COVID-19 symptoms to use the online virtual visit feature instead of going to a physical health clinic. The virtual visit will provide referrals for COVID-19 testing when warranted. Students who live out of state should contact their local health care provider.

Students who test positive for COVID-19 should notify Student Life at studentlife@furman.edu. Employees should notify Human Resources at humanresources@furman.edu.

Please regularly check Furman’s COVID-19 website for updates, including on any future positive-test cases.
