Definition

This is when the heart stops beating, which prevents blood from being able to circulate through the body. This can occur from heart attacks, drowning, electric shock, and other medical problems. Signs of this are when the individuals are unresponsive or not breathing normally.

Response

Campus police and/or 911 should be called and notified of the problem and the location. Begin performing chest compressions immediately. If the person is not responsive, obtain an AED and follow the instructions listed on the device. Only stop chest compressions when the AED is there. Have one person meet EMS units to direct them to the scene.
