Hostage Situation
Definition
The FBI defines hostage situations as “ the seizing or detention of an individual coupled with a threat to kill, injure or continue to detain such an individual in order to compel a third person or governmental organization to take some action.”
Response
If it is safe to do so, contact the police as soon as possible. Stay calm, be polite, and cooperate with the captors. Learn as much as you can from the captors. Take note of the following information:
- Location
- Number of possible hostages
- Descriptions of the hostages, included quantity of hostages
- Any weapons they may have
