Definition

An active shooter is when an individual, usually equipped with weapons such as firearms or edged weapons, as well as vehicles, has the intent of harming and/or killing people in a populated area.

Response

To increase your chances of survival, implement RUN, HIDE, FIGHT tactics.

Contact Furman Police, either by phone call or through the LiveSafe App, or local law enforcement.

  1. RUN: Evacuating the affected area is always the first, best option during an attack. Have a plan for escape in mind. Think outside the box – break windows and walls if necessary to get away. Call 911 or campus police at 864.294.2111. Warn those around you as you evacuate.
  2. HIDE: If escape is not an option, hide in an area out of the attacker’s view. Lock, and if possible, barricade doors. Notify campus police and call 911. Consider using the LiveSafe app if you must remain silent.
  3. FIGHT: As a last resort, do whatever it takes to save your life and the lives of others. Fight back as a group. Consider using improvised weapons, such as a fire extinguisher, belt, or other object. Look for opportunities to go on the offensive, such as when the shooter is reloading or distracted.

When you call the police, include the following information:

  • Location
  • Number of people with you
  • Physical description of shooter
  • Description of weapons
  • Location of shooter
  • Direction of shooter
  • Description of any injuries

When Law Enforcement arrives

  • Remain calm and listen to officers
  • Raise your hands with your fingers spread, and have them EMPTY (this includes cell phones)
  • Make quick movements towards officers

Preparation

Ensure that you are registered to receive emergency alerts from FUPD. Take notice of available exits and be aware of your environment. Also, be aware of the run, hide, fight tactics.

Additional prevention: Report threats and suspicious activity, and make sure peers get help before they potentially become a threat to themselves and/or others
