This year Furman enrolled over 90 students seeking to become the first generation of their immediate family to pursue a 4-year degree. The Center of Inclusive Communities will host several opportunities for faculty and staff members to show their support:

  • First Gen Fridays: On the first Friday of each month, faculty and staff are encouraged to wear t-shirts in support of First Gen students.  To request a t-shirt, email Rod Kelley.  The next First Gen Friday is November 3.
  • National First Gen Lunch: First Gen students, faculty, and staff are invited to enjoy a free catered lunch on Wednesday, November 8, 11:30am – 1:30pm in the Watkins Room (Trone Student Center).  Wear your First Gen t-shirt and win door prizes! Complete the registration form to RSVP.
  • “We Are First!”: Stories from Furman First Gen, hosted by the First Gen Student Alliance (FGSA): Swing by the Joseph Vaughn Plaza in front of the Duke Library on November 9, between 2-5pm to share and read anecdotes on why First Gen students chose to take on the challenge of going to college.
  • A Fork in the Road: Becoming the Master of My Fate: On November 9, 8-9pm., in Johns Hall 101, Dr. Joleesa Johnson will provide insight on the conflicts people face with predetermined outcomes or paths they are expected to follow, the conflict that can arrive when dissonance occurs, and strategies for addressing this conflict.
