Title: Mobile Device Support Policy

Applicable: Furman University (Students, Faculty and Staff)

Background: Mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets have become prevalent on campus. As their numbers have increased so has the variety of such devices. Since there are many different types of mobile devices, and hundreds of thousands of apps, ITS cannot provide detailed configuration assistance beyond settings for the campus network, email and calendar.

Policy: Information Technology Services will support student, faculty, and staff smartphones and tablets by providing settings for campus email, calendar, and wireless networking.

Guidelines:

  • If the smartphone or tablet is capable of using Furman’s secure wireless network, ITS will assist with configuring the device to use the campus wireless network.
  • If the smartphone or tablet is capable of using with Furman’s e-mail system, ITS will assist with configuring the device for Furman e-mail account by providing appropriate settings for the Furman email system. Data transfer is the responsibility of the student, faculty, or staff member. ITS may provide documentation for setting up mobile devices that work with Furman’s electronic mail system.
  • If the smartphone or tablet is capable of synchronizing with Furman’s calendar system, ITS will assist with configuring the device for Furman’s calendar system by providing appropriate settings. Data transfer is the responsibility of the student, faculty, or staff member. ITS may provide documentation for setting up mobile devices that work with Furman’s calendaring system.
  • Any hardware problems should be directed to the manufacturer of the device. ITS offers no hardware troubleshooting or repair.
