Furman Focused update: Yellow Phase

Dear Campus Community,

March is just around the corner and we’re approaching the middle of the semester with great progress toward increased activities because of your diligence. We will continue operating in the Yellow: Enhanced Precautions phase this next week, but are progressing toward the Purple Phase, so keep up the good work and don’t let up.

Please carefully read the following updates.

COVID Dashboard

We completed surveillance testing for 384 on-campus students this week, resulting in 3 asymptomatic positives (.78% positivity rate). In addition, there were 4 positive cases reported by the Earle Student Health Center. The Furman Focused Dashboard and Campus Operational Phases were updated yesterday.

Surveillance testing

We will continue with our COVID surveillance monitoring next week, testing 25% of the student pool, split between Monday and Wednesday. Selected students will receive instructions the day prior to testing. We will not conduct surveillance testing for employees next week.

Men’s basketball watch party

There are only 50 student tickets remaining for the men’s basketball watch party on Saturday, Feb. 27, at 7 p.m. Click here to register for a free ticket (includes a box dinner and a T-shirt) to watch the Furman men battle Wofford in the final game of the regular season to hold the #1 seed in the SoCon tournament. Timmons Arena doors will open at 6 p.m.

Dining addition for students

Per student requests, Bon Appetit will be opening the pizza and pasta station in the DH starting Monday, March 1, at lunch.

Student activities

Whether on or off campus, there are many ways for students to connect and stay fit (mentally and physically). See this week’s edition of DINformation for upcoming opportunities.

Pool and group exercise available for employees

The PAC fitness center will continue to be open to employees daily from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. (closed for cleaning between 12:20–12:45 p.m.).

Effective Monday, the swimming pool (lap pool) will be open to employees on Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays from 11:30 a.m.–12:30 p.m. and 12:30–1:30 p.m., with six swimmers per hour. Employees may make reservations at rec.furman.edu or by calling 864-294-3581. Walk-ins are allowed, if there are open lanes. The locker room will be open for swimmers only during this time, and employees must provide their own towel. Furman ID’s are required for admittance.

Also, effective Monday, employees are invited to participate in free group exercise classes in the PAC dance studio. Classes will be limited to 12 participants and sign up is required. Masks and physical distancing are required. For more information, please contact Kelly Frazier (Health Sciences).

Tip of the week: Selection for surveillance testing

We are currently conducting COVID-19 testing at 25% of the student body each week. A statistical software program generates a list of students selected for testing each week using a random sampling process commonly employed in epidemiology. Testing a randomly selected portion of the student body provides an estimate of campus COVID-19 disease activity representative of the larger student body population. Random sampling means that students have an equal probability of being selected on any given testing week, just as heads or tails are equally likely when flipping a coin. In other words, it is possible to be selected multiple weeks in a row.

Students, remember that you can reach out to your peers on the student advisory group to ask questions and send them suggestions to share with the steering committee.

Please continue to follow the Paladin Promise, complete your daily LiveSafe health survey, and check the Furman Focused website and your email for regular updates.

Have a fun, safe weekend!

Sincerely,

Ken Peterson, Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost
