Melissa Browning is currently the administrative assistant for the Department of Music at Furman University. She has held various positions in institutions of higher learning beginning in 2004 when she was an undergraduate student majoring in graphic design at Monroe Community College.

Melissa was born in Bainbridge, Georgia; grew up in Marion, New York, and worked and lived in Rochester, New York prior to moving to South Carolina. She earned her master's degree in English language and literature from the University of Maryland, College Park. As a humanitarian, her personal goal in life is to engage in institutional and community work that serves to uplift, motivate and empower underrepresented individuals to speak up against hate, racism and social injustices.

Melissa likes to keep a smile on her face even during times of hardship or despair. Most importantly, she loves learning new knowledge. Melissa’s hobbies include fishing, sewing, reading, church activities and attending gospel concerts. On the weekends she tutors 8th graders online in English literature and written communication skills online.
