The Furman University Climbing Gym is in the PAC and is available for all climbing levels. Trained staff members will be on hand to provide instructions and belays. The wall ranges from 15-28 ft. tall and features bouldering, top rope, and lead climbing. Push yourself to new heights at the Furman wall!
Abridged Policies
Climbing carries inherent risk, and all participants climb at their own risk. Staff conduct regular safety inspections, but every climber shares responsibility for flagging safety concerns.
- A current climbing waiver and a valid Furman ID, Fusion Go digital ID, or CRW ID are required to participate.
- Access for dependents, retirees, and community members is sold separately at the climbing gym desk.
- First-time climbers must complete a new climber orientation.
- Climbing is permitted only when climbing wall staff are on duty.
- See Memberships & Services page for additional details about pricing, age restrictions, and access.
- No food, gum, candy, or beverages on the climbing pads.
- No climbing under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
- The climber who started first has the right of way; bouldering below an active top-rope climber is prohibited.
- Stay below the bouldering line unless connected to the appropiate climbing system (i.e. top rope belay, autobelay, or lead belay).
- Staff may require a spotter and can remove climbers engaging in unsafe behavior.
- All climbing gear must carry an internationally recognized safety certification (UIAA, CEN, CE, or UKCA); personal gear is subject to staff review.
- Seat harnesses, triple-locking carabiners, and a Figure 8 Follow Through tie-in are required above the bouldering line.
- Closed-toe, closed-heel shoes are required; climbing shoes are recommended (socks required with rentals).
- Remove jewelry, tie back long hair, and tuck in loose clothing before climbing or belaying.
- Belayers must pass the CRW belay test (minimum age 16) before belaying; the test requires a 24-hour wait after the belay clinic.
- Standard technique is PBUS/BUS; belayers must stay standing, manage the drop zone, and never lower faster than walking pace.
- Auto belay users must perform a pull test and gate check before each climb.
- Don’t spray beta — let climbers work out their own moves.
- Respect other climbers and communicate clearly using standard climbing commands.
- Climb with caution and report safety concerns to staff.
