Overview
Please remember, this is a collegiate gym membership and not a private gym. Our purpose is to provide life-changing wellness opportunities to the Furman community that encourages active, healthy lifestyles. As such, our approach may vary significantly from the typical experience of private athletic clubs.
The policies, equipment offered, music played, and group exercise classes are all artfully curated to promote a welcoming, inclusive environment for college students. Please review the rest of the policies and procedures prior to purchasing to ensure that a CRW Membership is a good fit for you. Community Members, to request a status change (e.g. cancellation, convert from a family to a single, etc.), please complete the online request form.

Eligibility Tiers
Current undergraduate and graduate Furman students enjoy a CRW membership at no additional cost. Access for enrolled students coincides with the current term’s official move-in date. If a student is approved to move-in early for sponsored activities, then their access to CRW programs/facilities will align. Students’ access will continue through the proceeding enrolled terms; i.e., students enrolled in the Spring and subsequent Fall semester will retain access throughout the Summer. Access for students approved for commencement will expire by the first day of class in the proceeding term. Graduating seniors conducting Furman faculty sponsored research may have their access extended on a case-by-case basis.
Interns are undergraduate/graduate students enrolled at Furman, or a reciprocal institution, that are currently conducting internship work as defined by their institution. Interns are temporary in-nature and intern eligibility expires within 90 days of the beginning of their internship.
Current faculty/staff at Furman receive a CRW membership as a benefit. They may pick up their ID card at HR after completing the online request form.
Dependents over the age of 13 and spouses/partners of current faculty/staff may enjoy a free membership as well. The sponsoring faculty/staff member must first identify those dependents in their WorkDay profile and then request ID cards from the form on the HR website. Please reach out to HR for instructions on how to add dependents in WorkDay. Dependents visiting home from abroad may either use this system, or purchase a punch pass at the community rate.
Dependents are generally defined as
- Children under the age of 19 and living in the same household.
- A full-time student under the age of 24.
- Any age if permanently and totally disabled and under the care of the sponsoring employee.
See also “Vulnerable Persons” policy listed below. Parents/guardians must be in the same facility for dependents under 18.
Retirees of Furman and their spouses/partners may continue to enjoy their CRW membership benefit. Dependents of retirees must purchase a community membership to maintain access.
Furman alumni may purchase a CRW membership at a discounted rate to continue their access to CRW facilities and some limited programs.
Community CRW memberships are available to members in the surrounding area. Please see pricing and eligibility charts and CRW membership philosophies prior to purchasing.
Community Family memberships are available to consolidate pricing for multiple family members in one household. This tier includes 1 head of household, 1 spouse/partner, and up to 4 dependents living in the same household.
Dependents are generally defined as
- Children under the age of 19 and living in the same household.
- A full-time student under the age of 24.
- Any age if permanently and totally disabled and under the care of the sponsoring member.
Affiliate employees are those members who may work on/around the Furman campus, but they are not directly employed by Furman University. Some of these employees may even have a Furman email address. However, affiliate employees are not benefitted a free CRW membership. They must purchase a membership in the community tier to be eligible to utilize the Fitness Center and its amenities.
Access Levels
The day pass provides access to CRW facilities & programs (see eligibility table for exclusions).
The guest pass is intended for existing members to provide sporadic access to their friends and family that may be visiting the campus. The purchaser must have an active membership to buy/bring a guest. Additionally, they must sponsor their guest and be with them throughout their visit. Failure to check-out the guest(s), could result in suspension of membership.
The trial pass is intended for patrons considering a membership but would like a trial period before continuing with a full membership. This is only a trial, and not intended to replace the other options; hence, individuals are limited to buying this type of pass to once per year. This pass expires within two weeks from purchase.
Punch passes are meant as a stopgap measure for those needing more than a day pass, but less than a full-blown membership. Visits are used when the patron wishes to use the facility. Punch passes expire within a year of purchase. Unused/expired passes will not be refunded.
Intern passes are intended for those with intern eligibility only. Each purchased pass provides 7 visits that must be used within a 90-day window. Unused/expired passes will not be refunded. This is valid for interns staying on Furman University campus only.

Membership Philosophies & Policies
The following five values embody the culture and environment that CRW strives to build throughout our programs and facilities. Beyond the typical gym etiquette, members are asked to support these values.
- Foster a welcoming environment to all.
- Analyze, think critically, & synthesize.
- Build a resilient body & mindset.
- Think outside the box.
- Be responsible & take the initiative.
- Furman ID cards are required for entrance/participation in any CRW-managed space/program.
- All participants must check-in at the approved station prior to participating in CRW activities.
- Failure to present an ID at the time of entry/check-in may result in an inability to participate.
- Further, this may lead to intramural teams forfeiting due to a lack of eligible team members. It is the responsibility of the participant – not CRW staff to verify identity.
- Exceptions:
- Participants wishing to enter the PAC Fitness Center for informal recreation may be “looked up” within the CRW recreation management system. This procedure is known as Forgot ID.
- Participants have up to three chances (strikes) before they will be turned away and denied entry for lack of Furman ID.
- The participant may not enter the facility without retrieving their ID.
- If the participant’s ID is broken/lost, it is their responsibility to seek replacement from the appropriate department on-campus.
- The strikes will be reset to zero every academic year.
The department is currently reviewing the dress code with its recreation advisory board. That said, dress in the gym varies from person to person. CRW wants to reduce barriers, provide freedom of expression, and create a comfortable workout environment. To some, this may mean more modest clothing, and to others, it may mean keeping up with the latest fitness apparel trends. CRW members should consider this is a very fluid conversation and to focus on wearing clothing that makes them feel comfortable while pursuing their own wellness goals.
Generally speaking, private parts must be covered, and closed-toed shoes must be worn while in non-swimming areas. Sandals are recommended for locker rooms and pool areas. For additional details, please review the forthcoming dress code policy.
Another area of freedom of expression includes fitness center music and tv choices. Members should expect easier music in the morning and getting progressively more upbeat throughout the day. Many students prefer music that may be inappropriate for young audiences. Station selection is based on the time of day and staff member working. For more information, please see our dedicated policy on music & tv stations.
The PAC is a multi-use facility with multiple stakeholders; therefore, the equipment selection and layout is a carefully managed process. The Recreation Advisory Board meets regularly to discuss a variety of items including equipment. Proposals are developed based on the advice of the RAB, and then reviewed by the PAC Fitness Committee.
- Be a good human.
- Replace equipment after you have used it and use gym wipes when appropriate.
- Be considerate of phone usage.
- Use headphones.
- Work hard and celebrate the PR’s…not every rep.
Minors and other vulnerable persons (defined under state law as a person “who has a physical or mental condition that substantially impairs such person from adequately providing for their own care or protection”), must always have a parent/legal guardian with them when utilizing CRW facilities and/or participating in sanctioned activities. This “sponsor” is responsible for managing the vulnerable person and their compliance with other CRW policies. Only the parent/legal guardian of the vulnerable persons qualifies as a sponsor – older siblings are not eligible.
- Under the age of 13:
- Prohibited from participating in the weight room, cardio theater areas, and group fitness programs.
- Must have direct supervision by their sponsor when utilizing the pools or gymnasium.
- Their parent/guardian must be within the same activity area and reasonable distance to manage their participation.
- Under the age of 16:
- May utilize fitness center equipment and participate in group fitness programs.
- Their parent/guardian must be within the same activity area and reasonable distance to manage their participation.
- May utilize fitness center equipment and participate in group fitness programs.
- Under the age of 18:
- May participate in all CRW member activities.
All persons, regardless of age, are responsible for using fitness equipment as designed by the manufacturer. It is not the responsibility of CRW staff to manage vulnerable persons participating in CRW managed facilities or programs.
Any member, user, guest, or visitor of CRW programs and facilities is subject to its policies. Failure to follow the policies/verbal requests of CRW staff members may result in action steps. The following list outlines the general approach taken for handling incidents within CRW’s domain. It is not exhaustive, nor is it always linear.
- Staff may address behavior/concern with patron.
- Elevated staff member may readdress behavior/concern.
- Patron may be asked to leave.
- If the patron fails to leave on staff request, FUPO will be asked to assist.
- Incident reports will be submitted and reviewed by CRW professional staff.
- Patron will be suspended pending a meeting with professional staff.
- The meeting will not take place within the same day of the incident.
- All meetings must be scheduled in-advance. Walk-ins will not be accepted for these matters.
- After a review, the professional staff member may:
- End the suspension after a discussion with the patron.
- Continue a temporary suspension (e.g., days, weeks, month, semester, etc.).
- Assess fees for damaged equipment/facilities.
- Elect to continue a long-term/indefinite suspension.
Please note, there are no refunds for patrons who cancel memberships as a result of action taken by CRW staff following an incident.
The fitness center is staffed mainly by student workers. As such, the operational hours reflect the availability of our workforce. CRW will post operational hours throughout the PAC facility. When hours need to be adjusted, the information will be available in the following ways (varied by limiting factors such as inclement weather):
- Signage posted on entry doors
- Except in the case of inclement weather
- Social media accounts
- Instagram: @furmanCRW
- Google Maps listing
If the weather is questionable, CRW encourages members to check-out social media platforms.
Breaks & Holidays
When classes are not in session, the facility reserves the right to reduce operational hours/close the facility. The reduced hours are commonly referred to as “break” or “holiday” hours. Break/holiday hours will be enforced during the Summer and most holidays; though, the fitness center may be closed on certain holidays.
