Huff Center for Piedmont History

In the late 1990s, Dr. Stephen O’Neill established the Center for Piedmont History through donations and grant funding.  In 2004, Dr. O’Neill changed the name of the organization to the Huff Center for Piedmont History in honor of the retirement of A.V. Huff, a longtime faculty member in the History Department (1968-2003), Vice President of Academic Affairs and Dean (1996-2003), and distinguished historian of Greenville and South Carolina history.

The Huff Center for Piedmont History serves as a platform for engaged learning in the History Department at Furman University.  Today, the Center largely serves as a funding source for (1) student, faculty, or collaborative research projects during the academic year or summer on local or South Carolina history; (2) supports in-house scholarly work and public history projects by our faculty on local or South Carolina history; and (3) sponsors Cultural Life Program (CLP) lectures or other events that promote local or South Carolina history to the general public, the Furman community, and our majors.

To receive Center funding, students and/or faculty shall submit an application, detailing the nature of the scholarly project, a proposed timeline, and any estimated costs.  The department chair, in consultation with Dr. Stephen O’Neill, shall determine how Center Funds are disbursed.

Applications will be accepted immediately and be considered on a rolling basis.

Questions regarding the Huff Center for Piedmont History should be sent to Dr. Lane Harris, Professor of History and Department Chair: lane.harris@furman.edu.
