Get Involved

Communication Studies is a place to develop skills in leadership, marketing, teamwork, media production, journalism, and fundraising. Our student organizations provide co-curricular opportunities for students to enhance these skills alongside their coursework.

The Media Lab

Our Media Lab is one of the busiest places in Furman Hall. Communication Studies students have access to our broadcast studio, editing bays, camera equipment, podcast kits, and technology to capture those hard to reach shots like gimbals, iPhone mounting kits, and drones.

The lab is a fully functional broadcast studio, complete with integrated cameras and lights on a tricaster switching system. Many of our shows, podcasts, and digital storis are produced in the studio, our equipment is also portable, allowing Furman, Greenville, and the world to shine in our productions. Our drones fly high above the Furman lake every week, but you might also find them on a MayX trip to Ghana or capturing an event in downtown Greenville.

The Media Lab is the home of our television studio, in which students produce a regular newscast that airs on the campus cable network. Our students also routinely create sports reports, documentaries, PSAs, advertisements, and other forms of digital media.

Lambda Pi Eta (Honors Society)

Founded in 1776 during the American Revolution, Phi Beta Kappa celebrates and advocates excellence in the liberal arts and sciences. Its campus chapters induct the most outstanding students at America’s leading colleges and universities, and only about 10 percent of the nation’s institutions of higher education have Phi Beta Kappa chapters.

Comm Studies Advisory Council

Because our major is large and robust, we rely on student input to make our programs vibrant and current. Our student advisory board is a select group of juniors and seniors who work with the faculty on programming, make suggestions about curriculum, and celebrate student achievements.

The Paladin

The Paladin is more than just a student news network; it’s the voice of Furman’s students. As Furman University’s only independent student news network, it is our responsibility to offer in-depth coverage of campus news and provide a platform for the content our community needs and wants.
