Furman Pride Alliance (FPA)
A group for students who do not identify with society’s normative gender or sexual roles and their allies, the FPA provides a social space where students can feel free to express their gender and sexual identifications in a non-judgmental environment and receive support from other students. Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Resource Center
Gender and identity shape how we experience the world. The Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies (WGSS) Program gives students the intellectual and practical tools for engaging with the ways gender and sexuality impact our lives – as employees, as citizens, and as individuals.
Through a multidisciplinary approach, the WGSS program helps students explore the intersections of gender, race, ethnicity, age, class, ability, sexuality, and religious affiliation. Learn to apply theoretical concepts to understand and dismantle oppression from racism to sexism and homophobia to classism to religious intolerance.
In addition, the WGSS/LGBTQ+ Resource Center provides students a safe and inviting place to meet for discussion and study. Learn more about the WGSS program.
Safe Zone Program
Relaunched in Fall 2017, Furman’s Safe Zone Program helps insure that there will be faculty and staff members across the university trained in providing non-judgmental support and guidance for students who want to explore issues about their sexuality or gender in a one-on-one environment. To identify a safe zone, look for an official Furman safe zone decal displayed in the office of our faculty or staff members. Learn more. Transgender Students and Allies
Transgender Students and Allies
Furman University does not discriminate on the basis of gender identity and is committed to fostering an inclusive community where all students can fully engage in campus life consistent with their gender identity. Gender identity and its expression may develop at a different pace for each individual. To support this, various University offices have resources available to assist transgender students, based on each student’s preferences and needs. Accessing support from one office does not automatically notify others, allowing students to determine when, how, and to whom their gender identity is disclosed. This self-directed approach empowers students to engage with available resources in the way that best supports their individual journey.
LGBTQ Committee
Furman’s LGBT+ faculty and staff represent a supportive community that celebrates the diversity of sexuality and gender expression found throughout campus. We encourage and embrace opportunities to create a more welcoming and affirming environment for all faculty, staff and students. Visit Out at Furman.
Sexual Harassment and Rape Prevention Committee
The Sexual Harassment and Rape Prevention Committee includes faculty, staff, students, and citizens from around Greenville committed to educating the campus community about sexual harassment, sexual assault, and rape. While always working to prevent such incidents from occurring, the committee also educates the campus about resources and support for survivors of sexual assault. Learn how we can help.
