Programs & Opportunities

Today’s students are tomorrow’s leaders, change agents, and decision makers. As educators, it is imperative we help students develop a sustainability worldview through sustainability education and opportunities that will shape their values, perceptions, and mindset and guide their behavior and actions toward creating a more sustainable world. The Shi Institute offers an array of student programs and resources designed to develop this sustainability worldview.

  • The Student Fellowship Program engages students in real-world, campus and community sustainability fellowships, with offerings during the summer and the academic year.
  • The Furman Farm is an organic-practice farm that provides produce for the dining hall, has a comprehensive composting program, and is a hub for the practice of small-scale sustainable food production.
  • The Greenbelt Community is an intentional living/learning community intended to foster sustainable living and lifestyle choices among its student residents.
  • Eco Rep programming instills a sense of sustainability into Furman’s culture by promoting sustainable behaviors through education, awareness, and sustainability themed events.
