Humanities Lab – HUM 502
- Creates a curricular space for students to pursue independent or group projects in a resource rich, supportive classroom environment. Coursework includes assigned readings and discussions, independent research, presentations, and focused work with faculty.
- Enables students to concentrate on special academic, community, or creative projects while earning course credit (4 credits). The course is currently offered each fall and spring semester.

- The HUM Lab complements the independent study system in that students can focus on individual research/projects alongside a professor or undertake larger endeavors based on their work in a current or previous course.
- Course instructor helps establish goals, benchmarking, and provides ongoing structure and support (along with other students in the course) while additional professors with necessary expertise relative to student projects serve as project consultants.
- The instructor of record fosters a supportive learning and working community, introducing students to mentor and funding resources as needed, and ensuring they can establish and meet meaningful benchmarks to deliver a substantive project by the end of the semester.
The professor will work with the individual student or student groups to determine this, but the course does offer flexibility for students to coordinate with outside professors, staff, or community partners during some class meetings.

- Faculty serving as in-field experts from those departments pertaining to the Humanities Lab’s student projects are financially compensated up to $3K by the Furman Humanities Center (FHC) for their time relative to a menu of options depending on how involved a given faculty member chooses to be.
- Faculty electing to meet with students throughout the semester for four meetings or more are compensated $500/student.
- Faculty providing reading suggestions and/or project or process input once at the beginning earn an honorarium of $150.
- Faculty falling in between these poles (mentoring once at the start of the semester and then once more at any point) qualify for $250.
