Created in 1930, the National Pan-Hellenic Council is a coalition of historically African American fraternities and sororities. Furman currently recognizes two National Pan-Hellenic Council chapters, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. and Kappa Alpha Psi, Fraternity, Inc.  Each organization maintains community standards, manages intake efforts, and works with other student organizations to host programs and activities.

Established in 1908, Alpha Kappa Alpha was the first sorority created for African-American women. The sorority is dedicated to creating a college experience that is meaningful and productive. Alpha Kappa Alpha participates in programs both on campus and off, including one major fundraiser, “So You Think You Can Stroll.” The organization also won the Boundary Breaker award for promoting diversity and community service at Furman.
