Hitting the Links: The Furman University Golf Course

By: Whit Buchanan

Do you ever have a ton of free time with nothing to do? Do you ever want to be active outside without a strenuous workout? Do you like free things? If you answered yes to any of these questions, then the Furman University Golf Course is perfect for you! This 18-hole golf course is conveniently located on the back side of Furman’s campus.  With a par of 72, the course is excellent for beginners to learn the game of golf, while also challenging for those more experienced members.

While the course is open to members of the public, Furman students enjoy a special privilege. During the school year, Furman students receive a special rate at the course. Monday through Thursday of every week, students can walk 9 holes for free. This is an exceptional deal, as a typical 9-hole round of golf at the Furman University Golf Club is around $20. If you have free time after your classes, a 9-hole round of golf takes around 2 hours to complete, and walking is also great exercise. Even if you have never played golf before, the Furman University Golf Club allows those students who are new to the game to practice and play at a discounted rate.

If you are new to golf, want to improve your talents, or even just want to warm up before a round, the Furman University Golf Course also has a driving range available. Students can rent buckets of golf balls to practice their swing. Lessons from PGA certified golf professionals are also available. These are an excellent resource for those trying to learn the game of golf. Help from a professional can better even the best of golfers.

Even if you are not a golfer, the Furman University Golf Course has amenities for you. Located at the clubhouse, the Traditions Grille is a dining option on campus. Furman’s meal plan is accepted at the Traditions Grille, making a popular spot among students. The Grille serves up sandwiches and burgers. Also within the clubhouse is the Pro Shop. If you would like Furman apparel, it is sold here.

Regardless of skill, experience, or knowledge, the Furman University Golf Course welcomes all. Happy golfing everyone!
