What is a communication and media studies major?
A communication and media studies major represents a focused exploration of media production, media history, media criticism and mass communication theories and research. The B.A. in communication and media studies is designed for students with interests in media management, policy and law; the study of media and its role in society; and media history and archives. This major will also explore digital storytelling, including broadcasting, media production, documentary and short-form video production, and sports media.

At Furman, we combine media history, criticism and research with robust professional practice in media production. Furman is uniquely situated in Greenville, South Carolina, a vibrant city home to a top 40 national media market filled with opportunities for media internships in management, production and on-air talent. Furman also has an extensive media archive, spanning early journalism, magazine and print design, and print history. The communication studies department has an in-house studio complete with state-of-the-art recording equipment, broadcast cameras, and boom mics, as well as drone, virtual reality and augmented reality technologies. Our mix of study in media history and theory coupled with media production opportunities offer students the chance to develop a firm foundation in media.

How will you learn?
All majors in communication studies learn about the deep history of communication in society, the practices of communication through spoken and written word, and the latest advancements in digital communication tools. Communication and media studies majors focus their studies on media history, policy, and criticism or production and storytelling (or both). Our majors take classes with dedicated professors who study complex media ecosystems and develop mentoring opportunities with area professionals in media management and production. Depending on their personal goals, our majors complete a capstone experience by conducting independent archival research alongside a faculty mentor, investing in civic or community media intersections, or building a documentary, film or on-air reel to showcase their production skills.
