Want to see what it’s like to be a college student in Japan? You can spend a semester or a full academic year studying at one of our three partner schools in Japan. It’s a great opportunity to immerse yourself in the language and culture.
If you are serious about learning Japanese and have studied the language for at least two semesters, this year-long, language-intensive program is perfect for you. Waseda University is a private university in Tokyo that has crafted a program for exchange students. During the academic year, you’ll take courses on Japanese language, culture, and society.
Explore Tokyo
You’ll find no shortage of things to do and see in Japan’s capital. Tokyo has one of the most extensive railway networks in the world, providing easy access to museums, restaurants, shopping, and entertainment. But the city hasn’t lost its history, either. You’ll find yourself exploring temples, shrines, bath houses, and other historical sites.
Our accommodations
Most students in this program stay in the international dorms with students from around the world. But you’ll also have the option to reside with a host family in Tokyo or to live in the regular student dorms. Either way, you’ll become friends with students from a variety of backgrounds and cultures. Your meals will be provided by your host family or the university’s dining hall.
Our costs
The cost is about the same as a year at Furman. The best part? You can use your scholarships and financial aid and even apply for special study away scholarships.

Explore Osaka
Located in the heart of Japan, Osaka is the country’s commercial center. You’ll find all the amenities of a big city like museums, theatres, shopping, and parks. But you’ll also find historic landmarks like the Hozenji Temple. If you want to get away from the big city, Kansai Gaidai University is about an hour from Kyoto, home to one of the most valuable Japanese art collections in the country. Nara, which is home to the first organized political state in Japan, is also a short drive away.
