Department of Asian Studies Commitment to Diversity
The Department of Asian Studies is committed to providing students from all backgrounds, and particularly members of underrepresented groups, with a supportive and equitable learning environment. Through course work, departmental activities, research opportunities, and study away and MayX experiences, students will be introduced to a wide array of Asian and Asian diaspora cultures, as well as the complicated history of East-West relations. For example, in AST-200: Introduction to Asian Studies, students will not only complete a crash course in Asian history, but will also interrogate the concept of Asia itself (What is Asia? Who is Asian? And what do we actually study in Asian Studies?). This course, which all our majors take, delves into Orientalist narratives and colonial histories that have shaped perceptions of Asia in modern America and elsewhere.
Other experiences, such as study away programs in Japan, India, and China will help students reassess their own practices and expectations as they are immersed in the cultures of their host countries. Overall, the Department of Asian Studies is committed inclusive excellence in all areas of teaching, research, and study away. We’re excited to offer these opportunities to all our students.
