The Faculty Council at Furman University is composed of seven faculty members representing divisions across the institution (Arts, Humanities, Sciences and Social Sciences). The Faculty Council serves as a liaison between faculty and the administration on matters of strategic importance, policies, procedures and constitutional questions. The Faculty Council focuses on the role of faculty in university governance and addresses faculty issues which do not fall within the existing faculty standing committee structure. Recommendations or reports from the Faculty Council can be sent to the administration, relevant faculty committees or the full faculty.
The complete Operating Procedures for Faculty Council can be accessed here. The Faculty Council encourages members of the Furman faculty to contact any council member to raise issues of concern or importance that require communication between faculty and the administration. To contact Faculty Council, please email the Faculty Council Chair or any of the divisional or at-large representatives or fill out the comment box below.

The Lines Furman Must Not Cross
On April 23, 2025, the Furman University faculty overwhelmingly passed a resolution called “The Lines Furman Must Not Cross,” which asserts that: academic freedom is nonnegotiable; free inquiry is foundational to learning; and dignity, respect and inclusion enhance freedom of thought. The resolution also proclaims the faculty’s solidarity with vulnerable members of our community.
