The National Literacy Institute reports a staggering reality: over 130 million adults in the U.S. struggle with basic reading skills, leaving them unable to share a simple story with their children. This widespread illiteracy deeply impacts families and communities, with nearly half of American adults living below the poverty line due to their inability to read.

Beyond financial hardship, the effects of illiteracy ripple through emotional and social well-being, affecting both home and classroom dynamics. Alarmingly, about 40% of students nationwide read below a basic level, contributing to 60% of behavioral issues during reading activities.

In a world increasingly dominated by screens, fostering a love for books has become more challenging than ever. That’s where Snip, Style, and Story steps in, bringing the magic of reading to the heart of the community.

Through its innovative program, Snip, Style, and Story transforms everyday barbershops and hair salons into literacy hubs. By providing a curated selection of children’s books, the initiative turns waiting time into an opportunity to explore new worlds, spark curiosity, and create shared moments between parents and children on the way home. This unique approach not only promotes early literacy skills but also helps children discover the joy of reading in familiar, welcoming spaces.

Project Mission: Enhance literacy immersion among children.

Project Objectives:

  • Promote Reading: Create an engaging environment where children are encouraged to read while waiting for their haircuts or styles.
  • Support Literacy Development: Provide access to a diverse range of age-appropriate books that support literacy skills and foster a love for reading.
  • Engage Families: Involve parents and guardians in the literacy journey by offering books that can be shared and discussed during their visit.

Additional Benefits: Snip, Style, and Story not only nurtures early literacy skills in children but also engages parents and guardians in the journey. By offering books designed for shared reading and discussion, the initiative creates meaningful opportunities for families to bond over stories, extending the impact beyond the barbershop or salon visit.
