Phillis Wheatley Culinary arts for Healthy Outcomes Program

A centerpiece of the Nicholtown community, Phyllis Wheatley has been serving the Greenville area for 97 years. Situated in an area of high poverty, the neighborhood is considered a food dessert and the health of the community’s residents has been profoundly affected. PW CHOP, the Phyllis Wheatley Culinary Arts Program for Healthy Outcomes, is the collaborative effort of DLI class 24’s groups 3&4.

Serving 250 children a day from 17 zip codes, the community center has a long history of providing meals but had fallen into disrepair. Currently the community center is undergoing extensive renovation to once again become an effective neighborhood hub. The renovations did not include the kitchen, so DLI class members of PW CHOP stepped in to make the dream of creating a healthy eating learning center for these students a reality. With a goal of providing a space that is safe, up to required codes, and functions as an environment conducive to teaching, the team has developed partnerships with local chefs, businesses, churches, and nonprofits to raise funds and implement a new kitchen plan.
