C3 (Community, Coats and Cops)
Beginning on Nov. 23, the Greenville County Sheriff’s office will add a new element to their daily patrols. The deputies will be carrying winter coats that can be given to individuals and families who need protection from the cold weather. The coats will be stored in the officers’ vehicles and made available whenever a deputy recognizes a need.
This is a project of C3, a community action team of the Riley Institute’s Diversity Leaders Initiative. The group was tasked with developing a project that builds community and strengthens relationships among diverse stakeholders.
From Nov. 9-20, the DLI team is asking all citizens of Greenville County to donate new or gently used coats to the Salvation Army at 417 Rutherford Street in Greenville.
Collaborators in the project include; The Salvation Army, Greenville County Sheriff’s Office, Greenville Chamber of Commerce, Greenville Health System, Michelin North America, Inc. and Furman University.
Law enforcement professionals diligently protect and serve our communities 24 hours a day, seven days a week. In this capacity, law enforcement is positioned to see the real life challenges facing many in our community that often go unnoticed. There’s one particular challenge that law enforcement has seen and is now stepping up to serve. There are residents of our community that don’t have access to proper winter outerwear—coats. The core of law enforcement’s mission is to protect and serve, and it’s with this in mind that the Community, Coats and Cops initiative was formed.
