Children from low-income families often enter school with limited exposure to books and early literacy experiences, placing them at a significant disadvantage compared to their peers. Despite strong evidence showing that early and frequent reading dramatically improves language development, school readiness, and third‑grade reading proficiency – key predictors of long-term educational success – many families face barriers that prevent regular engagement in reading activities at home. Local library systems and community programs offer effective, research‑based literacy resources, yet these programs remain consistently underutilized in the very communities that need them most.

This underutilization has created a widening opportunity gap: children lacking early reading support are more likely to struggle academically, require remediation, and fall behind in later grades. Without targeted intervention, these disparities compound over time, impacting graduation rates, economic mobility, and community well-being. Bright Beginnings seeks to address this gap by increasing awareness, access, and participation in proven early‑literacy programs, ensuring every child, regardless of socioeconomic status, has the foundational reading skills necessary for lifelong success. Partnering with the Champions Center Back to School night will bring families together around the excitement of reading.
