Armonía

Armonía — Spanish for “harmony” — is a two-pronged project to create a music room for the homeless parishioners of Triune Mercy Center and to arrange for much-needed office space for the Hispanic American Women’s Association.

Triune is a non-denominational mission church that works with and alongside Greenville’s homeless. The Armonía group based the music room on the church’s art room, which has spurred creativity and esteem-building in participants, spawned a fundraising art show and a traveling art exhibit, and resulted in art work hanging all over the building. Using this model, group members turned a dark and dreary third-floor room into a bright and cheerful music room. They stripped and painted the room in peaches and whites, preparing one wall for a New Orleans jazz mural to be painted by the church’s art room participants. They then collected a piano, organ, drums, guitars, clarinet, trumpet and tambourines. When finished, the music room will be open for Triune participants to learn an instrument, rehearse, and plan for worship services.

Down the hall, another room was donated as office space for the Hispanic American Women’s Association, a non-profit, scholarship-raising organization to benefit Hispanic students. The group has worked out of members’ homes throughout its 11-year existence. In return for gaining office space, association members have been meeting with staff and volunteers to translate signs into Spanish for the large number of Hispanic people who come to Triune for assistance with groceries and clothing.
