A graduate of Furman, Anita Burroughs-Price returned to her alma mater to teach harp and serve as the head of the harp division. Before joining our faculty, she taught at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, Wake Forest University, St. Mary's School, and the South Carolina Governor's School for the Arts.

As a performer, Burroughs-Price is principal harpist with the North Carolina Symphony. She has also performed as a soloist with the Durham Symphony, the South Carolina Chamber Orchestra, the Piccolo Spoleto Festival, and England's Brighton Palace.

In addition to large performances, she has supported the arts through her volunteer performances for many charities, churches, synagogues and civic groups. This work includes performing in soup kitchens, prisons, Red Cross hurricane shelters, hospitals, and at the bedside of terminally ill patients.

Philosophy

I was most inspired by teachers who knew how to create stunning performances and show me how do the same, using timeless tools. Technique is important as a medium for musical communication. Equally important is artistry, and creativity. I have taught students here who entered Furman with years of training and four year olds just learning the musical alphabet. My joyous responsibility is nurturing and developing diverse gifts to fruition. Music can enhance each life and my studio is a balance of music majors and those pursuing harp as an elective. The opportunities for harpists are diverse so I present seminars on many topics. We discuss confident performance preparation, basics of harp pedagogy, instrument repair, writing contracts, weddings and sacred services, orchestral repertoire and how to audition/interview. Students are welcome to return for coaching after they have graduated. I frequently advise former students as they build their own successful careers.
