Paul Thomas writes commentary about reading reform programs
Paul L. Thomas, Furman University professor of education, writes an opinion piece in The State about how states tend to latch onto pricey fads to attack reading deficits, even in districts where proficiency is strong. In South Carolina, where hearings will begin Jan. 10 about the use of Read to Succeed, Thomas says the state should look elsewhere to shore up reading shortfalls. He channels mid-1900s literacy teacher and scholar Lou LaBrant to help argue his point.
