Following the second GOP debate, which took place in Simi Valley, California, Sept. 27, Furman University’s Brent Nelsen joined anchors at FOX Carolina and WYFF News 4 to break down winners and losers and key takeaways. Nelsen, the Jane Fishburne Hipp Professor of Politics and International Affairs, said the debate appeared “chaotic” as candidates competed for attention in a Republican race dominated by former President Donald Trump. Nelsen noted candidates’ willingness to take jabs at the former president. He also pointed out that despite representing the same party, candidates displayed ample disagreement on issues such as the war in Ukraine, gender identity, and social issues.

Nelsen said former Governor Nikki Haley won the day with her command of policy details.
