Margaret Oakes talks Margaret Cavendish on British podcast
Furman University’s Margaret Oakes, an English professor, had a conversation with British podcast host David Crowther about the colorful 17th century figure Margaret Cavendish, Duchess of Newcastle. Known for her fashion statements and a prolific writing career, a rarity in the day for women, Cavendish captured Oakes’s attention in the 1990s in part for the broad array of genres the Duchess covered, among them, science writing, poetry, verse and plays. Learn more about her in “The History of England” podcast from Crowther who also plugged Oakes’s new book due out in April, “To Gender or Not to Gender: Casting and Characters for 21st Century Shakespeare” (McFarland Books).
