‘Let Freedom Ring’ concert draws hundreds, lens of The Greenville News
The Greenville News ran a photo gallery of Furman University’s “Let Freedom Ring” concert featuring the Lakeside Concert Band, the Greenville Chorale and a fireworks display. The concert was part of the Department of Music’s “Sounds of Summer” lakeside series that continues through July this year. More than 50 years in the making, the series runs the gamut of music genres from pop to jazz to show tunes to bluegrass and more. Furman’s Lakeside Concert Band, composed of community members and Furman musicians, is led by alumna Sue Samuels ’87, director of bands and coordinator of music education.
Photojournalist Mark Susko captured the festivities June 26, which drew hundreds to the amphitheater lawn. Five more concerts will round out the series:
July 3 – 100th Army Band
July 10 – Lakeside Concert Band, “A Night at the Movies”
July 17 – Matt Olson Jazz Quartet, An Evening of Jazz with Matt Olson and Friends
July 24 – Lakeside Concert Band, “Give My Regards to Broadway”
July 31 – Lakeside Concert Band, “Our Favorite Things,” featuring Derek Parsons, professor of piano and soloist for Gershwin’s “Rhapsody in Blue” at McAlister Auditorium
All concerts are free and open to the public and start at 7:30 p.m. at the amphitheater except for the closing concert July 31, which will be held at McAlister Auditorium on the Furman University campus. Concert-goers can expect an hour or more of twilight tunes. Visit the “Sounds of Summer” website for more details.
