CLP: The Cherokee and the American Revolution

November 30, 2022 @ 6:30 pm - 7:30 pm

Many accounts of the American Revolution focus entirely on the conflict between the British government and the white inhabitants of the 13 Colonies. Yet in reality this milestone event involved many other communities in eastern North America, with the Cherokee Nation playing a particularly significant role. This presentation by Professor John Barrington of the Furman History Department will explain the ways in which the Cherokees impacted and were impacted by the Revolution and will offer some broader reflections on how to incorporate Native Americans into mainstream historical narratives. Helen Lee Turner of the Department of Religion sponsors this CLP.
