Furman University’s Danielle Vinson was tapped for an article appearing in The State about how personal wealth can impact political campaigns. Vinson, a Furman alum and professor of politics and international affairs, told reporter Joseph Bustos that dipping into personal coffers to cover campaign expenses is effective to a point, but ultimately, the voters will decide the outcome in the upcoming governor’s race and other political contests in the state.

“If you got to spend half your time raising money, that’s time you’re not spending getting in front of voters, and especially as we’re getting closer to the primary date, that becomes really important,” she said. “You can be a wealthy person, but if you’re not selling what the voters want, you’re not going to get elected. If you’re not doing an effective job at defining your opponents and defining yourself, you’re not going to get the job.”

The article also appeared in The Sun News.
