In a WYFF News 4 story, Furman University’s Brent Nelsen commented on the significance of former Vice President Kamala Harris’ visit to Greenville. Nelsen, the Jane Fishburne Hipp Professor of Politics and International Affairs, said her trip to the Upstate is an effort to build momentum ahead of the June 9 democratic primary, midterm elections and beyond. “They’re coming to support local candidates, and that’s what Kamala Harris was doing today, supporting local candidates for Congress and for the state House, and things like that, raising money for the party,” Nelsen said. “That’s a very important thing. So, it looks like they’re doing it for others, but they’re also doing it for themselves.”

In an unprecedented recruitment cycle, the South Carolina Democratic Party has fielded candidates for all 124 state House seats, seven statewide constitutional offices, seven congressional districts and the U.S. Senate seat held by Lindsey Graham. “This is a really big moment for Democrats in the state,” Nelsen said.
