Ahead of the first GOP debate set for Wednesday, April 1, for the South Carolina governor’s race, Furman University’s Brent Nelsen spoke to WYFF News 4’s Nate Stanley. Nelsen, the Jane Fishburne Hipp Professor of Politics and International Affairs, said that while the primary is many weeks away, candidates will participate in the debate, or choose not to, depending on their individual campaign strategy. “If you’re a businessperson and you’ve got a lot of money to be on television, then being in a debate doesn’t really matter that much,” he said. “But if you’re not able to raise a ton of money and need some free airtime, then a debate is the best place to get your name out,” he added.
