Following Team USA’s victory over Iran in the FIFA World Cup Nov. 29, WYFF News 4’s Peyton Furtado spoke with Furman University Men’s Soccer Head Coach Doug Allison and student-athlete Denison Jones ’24 in two separate on-camera interviews.

Allison noted that Furman has had an alumnus compete in each of the last four World Cups. Current center back for the USMNT Walker Zimmerman ’15 joins two other standouts in Furman soccer history – Ricardo Clark and Clint Dempsey. “They are on the biggest stage in the world and to have come through Furman University makes us extremely proud,” said Allison, who scouted the players as 15- and 16-year-olds.

Jones showed off a few ball skills and spoke about what Allison’s coaching and his World Cup legacy mean to him. “We’re not really results-oriented here, we are more process-driven,” Jones said. “But it does give you a lot of hope that the process that you’re going through is going to take you to a place that’s better than where you are right now.”
