Congressman Clyburn hopes Pres. Biden will pick SC judge for Supreme Court
Brent Nelsen, a politics and international affairs professor at Furman University, spoke to WYFF News 4 about a possible replacement for Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer who announced he would retire this year. J. Michelle Childs, district judge of the United States District Court for South Carolina, is Congressman James Clyburn’s pick for the nation’s highest court. If appointed, Childs would be the first African American woman to serve on the bench of the U.S. Supreme Court.
Nelsen offers some background about Childs. “She went to South Carolina law school; she has a master’s degree from South Carolina. And she’s been a judge here,” he said. “She’s now been nominated for a circuit court judge in Washington, D.C. So even if she isn’t nominated to the Supreme Court, she’s still going to be a very powerful judge.”
