Carmel sculptor Steven Whyte awarded grant for body of work

He is known in Furman University circles as the sculptor behind the Joseph A. Vaughn statue that now resides in the same-named plaza in front of the James B. Duke Library on campus. But Steven Whyte’s recognition goes well beyond Furman’s gates.

Whyte, who relocated to the U.S. in 2000 from England, was recently awarded the 2021 Stanley Bleifeld Memorial Grant by the National Sculpture Society for his body of work. The Carmel, California, sculptor has crafted 43 life-size or larger public bronze figures since his arrival in the states, his most recent being the statue of Vaughn ’68, the first African American to enroll at Furman.
