‘Fortunate Ones’ peeks behind the veil of Southern gentry

Furman University English and philosophy alumnus Ed Tarkington ’95 has released his second work of fiction, “The Fortunate Ones” published by Algonquin. The novel, which follows his 2016 debut “Only Love Can Break Your Heart” (Algonquin), receives praise in The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Carrying themes of money, politics, privilege and identity, Tarkington’s tome “reminds the reader that the South is never perfect and privilege will always have a price,” writes Amy Bonesteel for the AJC.

Tarkington holds advanced degrees from the University of Virginia and Florida State and teaches English at the Montgomery Bell Academy in Nashville, Tennessee – a private school that provided ample fodder for his newest work. A review of the novel also appeared in The Washington Post.
