Furman’s strengths-based approach to education

Earlier this year, Gallup Inc. honored Furman University with one of only five 2020 Don Clifton Strengths for Students Awards – an award that recognizes the integration of CliftonStrengths throughout campus. Gallup Inc. published an article about what makes the strengths approach at Furman so remarkable. In the piece, Shaniece Criss, a Furman health sciences professor, Ken Peterson, vice president of academic affairs and provost, and Kim Keefer, director of the Shucker Center for Leadership Development, are quoted. Keefer said, “CliftonStrengths for Students is a tremendous tool for moving the needle on reflection of who you are, what you do best and what gifts you have to offer the world.”

She also said faculty and staff are also more attuned to the strengths mindset. “People are realizing that strengths drive engagement and wellbeing not just for students but also faculty and staff. When people are excited about their work and engaged in our campus culture, then they as individuals are energized.”
