Mandy Powers Norrell ’95 named as running mate in S.C. governor’s race

South Carolina state capitol building or Statehouse

1995 Furman University alumna and democratic member of the State House of Representatives Mandy Powers Norrell has been selected to join democratic lawmaker James Smith on the ticket in the South Carolina governor’s race. Running as lieutenant governor, Norrell counts the 28 years’ collective experience she and Smith have in the Statehouse as one of their most valuable assets. Norrell, who serves on the House Judiciary Committee with Smith, was elected to the South Carolina House of Representatives in 2012 and represents the 44th District. The 2018 election will mark the first time candidates for governor and lieutenant governor will run on a joint ticket, a change endorsed by South Carolina voters in a 2012 referendum, according to an article in The Post and Courier

After receiving her bachelor’s in English at Furman, Norrell continued on to earn her J.D. at the University of South Carolina.
