With a bid to nationals on the line, the top eight teams from the Southern Rugby Conference (SRC) will participate in the SRC 7s Championship Tourney this Saturday at Roberts Field.

Beginning at 10 a.m., sixteen games will be played throughout the day. While there were 16 teams participating SRC 7s this spring, only the top eight advance to the conference tournament. The standings were based on the finishes in three qualifying tournaments that were held this spring at the Citadel, Wake Forest and Elon.

During those tournaments UNCC and Furman emerged as the top two teams. UNCC won the first two qualifiers, and Furman won the third. Furman’s only two losses in the series have come at the hands of the Forty-Niners. And Charlotte’s only loss was suffered against the Paladins. Furman has a 13-2 7s conference record. UNCC is 14-1.

While past performances can be an indicator of tournament success, there are no guarantees. This is sevens, a game of wide momentum swings that can be altered by a single dropped ball or missed tackle. Often times it is the hottest team – not the team that has compiled the best body of work – that emerges on top.

The winner automatically advances to the USA Rugby Men’s Div. 2 Collegiate Championship Tournament to be held May 19-21 in Glendale, Colorado.
