Abstract art by Furman University alumna Katie Walker ‘92 will be on display Monday, Oct. 8 through Friday, Oct. 26 at Thompson Gallery in the Roe Art Building on the Furman campus. Thompson Gallery hours are 9 a.m. – 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. A reception and gallery talk by Walker is scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 18 from 6:30 – 8:30 p.m. in the Roe Art Building.

Walker’s exhibition, “Journal Entries,” is free and open to the public.

Walker’s work is described by Wim Roefs as “occupying a space somewhere between abstract expressionism and color field painting.” Roefs, executive director of Columbia-based 701 Center for Contemporary Art and owner of if ART Gallery (Columbia), says Walker’s work captures “elements of minimalism and geometric art without the hard edges and clinical feel.”

Paul Matheny of South Carolina State Museum in Columbia says “Walker’s large-scale abstract paintings vividly reflect the energy she projects onto her canvases…The interactions between color, line, surface and, at times, the raw canvas reflect tensions between those elements or a flattering balance within their shared relationship in the final work.”

Walker regularly shows in galleries across the Southeast. She has taught at Furman University, where she earned her bachelor’s in studio art. She holds a master’s from the University of Georgia and studied and taught in the university’s Cortona Study Abroad program in Italy. Her work appeared in New American Paintings, Vol. 40, 2002.
