The SC RET program enables teachers to engage in a 6-week immensive research experiences at an institution in their local area. These experiences (the first for many SC teachers) expose teachers to modern research methods and allow them to link their research activities to classroom activities designed to increase student knowledge and awareness of science. Teachers are directed in carrying out unique, individualized research projects resulting in scientific presentation at the SC INBRE and/or EPSCoR Annual Meeting. Meanwhile, researchers at all SC colleges and institutions (see map below for examples of prior participating institutions) have the opportunity to directly engage teachers in their local community through in-depth 6-week research experiences. Listed below are the Summer 2022 research projects. Please check back later for a research projects for 2023.

This program represents a full time commitment (35 – 40 hours/week) and provides financial support ($3,000 each) to participants as well as a supplies budget (up to $500) to translate summer experiences into deliverables during the participant’s academic year instruction. Early 2023 we will be taking applications for the Research Experience for Teachers Summer 2023, please check back.
We are actively connecting teachers and potential mentors and encourage any teachers interested in this opportunity to submit their application ASAP. We hope to make connections (match teachers and mentors) in early April and confirm summer assignments by the end of April.
While teachers will engage in research at an institution in their immediate area, this program is managed by Furman University. For additional information or for any questions please contact Dr. John Kaup by email or phone 864.294.3773.
