The Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) requires that all studies that were previously approved by the full board review and that continue beyond one year must undergo continuing review. Your original approval letter from the IRB provides information about when your study expires and must be re-reviewed. Please provide the IRB with the following materials when submitting your continuation request:

  • Form A, indicating continuation, and appropriate signatures.
  • Letter to IRB providing a brief summary of findings, reason for continuation and any modifications to research.
  • Any documents that have changed from original approval.

For studies reviewed and approved by the IRB after January 21, 2019, continuing review is not required for:

  • IRB-determined Exempt Review research
  • IRB-determined Expedited Review research
  • Research (regardless of review type) that has completed all interventions and now only included analyzing data.

Research studies approved by the IRB prior to January 21, 2019 are subject to continuing review. Your original approval letter from the IRB provides information about when your study expires and must be re-reviewed. Please provide the IRB with the following materials when submitting your continuation request:

  • Form A, indicating continuation, and appropriate signatures.
  • Letter to IRB providing a brief summary of findings, the reason for the continuation and any modifications made to the research.
  • Any documents that have changed from original approval.

Furman’s IRB will then make a determination of whether continuing review will be required.
